In the first six months of 2017 we have seen funding for the EPA, the Arts, Education, the National Parks and Health Care devastated by the republican controlled government. We have seen a war against women, gays, seniors, Muslims and immigrants. While the fringe right is gaining power and the wealthy are getting wealthier, the marginalized are being swept under the rug of republican disdain.
Democrats and independents fight among themselves and we the people suffer. But we can regain control of the US House of Representatives in 2018, if we work together.
Recently, a special election in a deep red Georgia district showed us that we can flip the needed twenty-four U.S. House seats from republican control to democrat. In that election, Jon Ossoff the democratic contender gained fifteen percentage points from the republicans. The 2016 election revealed thirty-six republican controlled US House districts coming up for re-election in 2018 that are within that margin.
Can it be done? Yes, there are several things weighing in our favor. First of all, it has been done before, many times. As recently as 2010, republicans took forty-three seats away from democrats, and in 1994 they flipped fifty-two seats. Secondly, the current republican President is widely unpopular, with the lowest approval ratings of any newly elected president. Thirdly, there has been an unprecedented flow of money into the democratic coffers, just ready to spend where needed.
2018 will be our time to re-assert some control over the direction taken by the U.S. government, but it will not happen unless democrats and independents stop their infighting and pull together for this common goal. There is nothing more important than taking control of the US House in 2018 and each of us has a part to play.
